Breakout & Keynote

  • Jillian Armour, Ph.D. :: Private Practice
    Dr. Armour obtained a Ph.D. in audiology from the University of Utah in 1988 and an M.S. in speech-language pathology from the University of Denver in 1981. She has worked in public schools, hospitals, and home health, and has taught at the University of Utah. Jill ran a private practice in Salt Lake City for 18 years, with the primary focus being diagnosis and treatment of (C)APD. Jill has lectured internationally on APD and was on the technical advisory board for APD standards presented through ASHA. Other career delights include a federal grant that funded her work on a Navajo reservation and being a board member and helping to establish a school for students on the Autism Spectrum. She currently resides in Colorado with her two teenage sons.

  • Rachel Arntson, M.S. :: ECSE Willow Lane - Osseo Public Schools
    Since 1980, Rachel’s experience as a speech-language pathologist in Minnesota has included a hospital, pediatric clinic, and currently an infant-toddler program. Rachel’s passion for music created Kids’ Express Train, a company dedicated to “enhancing speech through music.” She has recorded eight CDs, stressing simple speech practice for children.

  • Rebecca Crowell, Au.D. :: St. Cloud State University
    Dr. Crowell teaches courses in hearing measurement, audiologic rehabilitation, advanced audiology, hearing science, and introduction to speech-language pathology and audiology. She supervises undergraduate and graduate students at the St. Cloud State University Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic and at off-campus sites. Her areas of professional and research interest are in pediatric audiology, auditory processing disorders, counseling patients and their families with communication disorders, and assistive technology for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Ruby Drew, Ph.D., BC-NCD(A) :: Western Carolina University
    Ruby is an associate professor in communication sciences and disorders at Western Carolina University. She is originally from Minnesota and earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She earned her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1996 and earned board certification in adult neurologic communication disorders from the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences.

  • Joseph R. Duffy, Ph.D., BC-NCD :: Mayo Clinic - Speech Pathology Department
    Joe is head of the division of speech-pathology in the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic and professor in the Mayo School of Medicine. He spends most of his workdays evaluating adults and children with communication disorders, many of them neurologically based. His research, scholarly, and teaching activities are primarily in the area of acquired neuropathologies of speech and language. He is the author of two editions of the book Motor Speech Disorders: Substrates, Differential Diagnosis, and Management. He has presented numerous workshops addressing language, motor speech, and psychogenic speech disorders. He is an editorial consultant for many professional journals, has served as co-chair of the Certification Board of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS), and is a member of the ANCDS practice guidelines committees for dysarthrias and apraxia of speech. He has been awarded the Honors of ASHA.

  • Candace Enix, M.S. :: Cherry Creek School District
    Candy is a speech-language pathologist in the Cherry Creek School District in Colorado. She serves on the Moderate Needs Team advisory team and the Training Support Team (for RtI) for her district. Candy received the Outstanding Public School Program for the state of Colorado in 2005. She has given several presentations on Response to Intervention to speech-language and special education audiences in Colorado. Candy is a member of CSHA and ASHA.

  • Julie Hanenburg, MSW, LICSW :: Private Practice
    Julie is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in counseling children with mental illness and their families. She is currently working in private practice in the central Minnesota area. Her areas of professional and research interest are in counseling children with autism and their families, child protection, physical/sexual abuse, and childhood mental illness.

  • Larry Hanken, Ph.D. :: Pearson Assessments
    Larry is a national consultant with Pearson Assessments (formerly AGS Publishing). He also served as a senior national consultant and national director of assessment consulting with another test publisher for more than 14 years. He has conducted training and educational consulting in 48 states as well as Canada, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Larry has presented assessment and instruction related topics at more than 130 state and national conferences to audiences in reading, mathematics, general instruction, special education, speech pathology, social work, counseling, and school psychology. In addition, Larry has more than nine years of experience in public education as a teacher, counselor, psychometrist, and administrator.

  • Patricia M. Hargrove, Ph.D. :: Minnesota State University Mankato
    Dr. Hargrove is a professor in the Department of Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Her areas of expertise include child language and phonology, prosody, and evidenced-based practice. She has presented at state, national, and international conferences.

  • Alex Johnson, Ph.D. :: Wayne State University
    Dr. Johnson is professor and Chair of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Previous positions include director of speech-language sciences and disorders at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and executive director of the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Johnson’s research and practice interests include medical speech-language pathology, language disorders in adults and children, and stuttering. Dr. Johnson is co-editor of his text, Medical Speech-Language Pathology: A Practioner’s Guide, now in its second edition. He is a Fellow of ASHA. In 2006, he served as the president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

  • Denise Kania, OTR/L :: Fairview Pediatric Rehabilitation Services
    Denise has been an occupational therapist since 1985. She has specialized in outpatient/sensory integration since 1993 and was SIPT certified in 1995. She has presented to the Minnesota Autism Society, American Orthopsychiatric Association, Minnesota Occupational Therapy Association state conference, and local schools.

  • Judith M. Kuster, M.S. :: Minnesota State University Mankato
    Judith, a professor at MSU Mankato, publishes several Web sites, writes the ASHA Leader Internet column, and is an ASHA Fellow. Her Internet work was recognized with the American Speech-Language and Hearing Foundation’s 1996 DiCarlo Award, 2003 International Fluency Association Distinguished Contributor Award, and 2007 International Stuttering Association Outstanding Contribution Award.

  • Cynthia F. Landis, M.A. :: University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview
    Cindy is a speech-language pathologist at Fairview Pediatric Rehabilitation in Eagan and at the University of Minnesota Hospital, Fairview in Minneapolis. Interests in oral sensorimotor skills have impacted her work with pediatric speech-language issues, orofacial myofunctional disorders, and facial nerve disorders. She has presented locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • Bonnie Lund, Ph.D. :: Minnesota State University Mankato
    Dr. Lund is a professor in the Department of Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Her areas of expertise include child language, augmentative communication, and evidenced-based practice. She has presented at state and national conferences.

  • Cathy McMillin, OTR/L, ATP :: Gillette Lifetime Specialty Healthcare
    Cathy has worked at the Gillette Lifetime clinic for five years and as an occupational therapist for 16 years. She has expertise in assessment and treatment for access needs for augmentative communication and computer access. She has presented on these topics at numerous state, local, and regional conferences.

  • Bruce Poburka, Ph.D. :: Minnesota State University Mankato
    Bruce is a professor and chair of the communication disorders program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Dr. Poburka has extensive experience in the area of voice disorders. He has conducted research, published, and presented on a variety of voice-related topics, including stroboscopy training techniques and issues, instrumental and perceptual assessment, voice therapy for selected populations, and special needs of performing artists.

  • Anita Schermer, M.A. :: Gillette Specialty Clinics
    Anita is a speech-language pathologist specializing in the area of augmentative communication services. She has more than 25 years of experience working with persons with disabilities, from preschool to older adults. Anita’s professional experience includes assessment and consultation in the areas of behavior challenges, AAC, and teaching strategies.

  • Jenne Tunnell-Morrison, Au.D. :: ISJ Mayo Health System
    Jenne received her M.A. in audiology in 1998 from Western Washington University and her Au.D. from the University of Florida in 2006. She enjoys clinical work and specializes in pediatric audiology, vestibular/balance assessments, and cochlear implants. She also enjoys travelling and trained in CI at the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center in Sydney, Australia. Jenne started a CI program at the National University Hospital in Singapore. After four years, she moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and was head of the audiology program there. She then moved to Rochester, Minnesota after terrorist activity forced her to leave. She worked at Mayo for a year before transferring to ISJ in Mankato in 2005 to start an audiology department.

  • Trisha R. Witmer, M.A. :: South Metro Speech Services
    Trisha graduated from Kansas State University in 1993. From July 1996 to July 2007, she worked at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota at their west location in the Twin Cities, and was a member of their Cleft and Craniofacial Team. In April 2007, she opened South Metro Speech Services in Shakopee, Minnesota.
 
  About the MNVoice presenters:
All presenters are members of MNVoice, a state-wide interest group of speech-language pathologists with specialty interest and clinical expertise in voice disorders. Each presenter has a minimum of five years of experience (and some, well over twenty years) in assessing, treating, and studying voice disorders. Presenters are employed in a range of sites, including representation from both metropolitan and regional areas, as well as hospital, university, and private practice clinics. Every presenter has access to specialty caseloads in voice disorders, including advanced voice measurement tools and collaborative professional experience with laryngologists who specialize in diagnosing and treating laryngeal pathologies.

    Dannel, an assistive technology specialist, is currently the DynaVox pediatric sales consultant. As an active member of the AAC community, she served as a board member, including president, for the Minnesota Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (MNSAAC) from its inception until its conclusion.

  • John A. Hanson, Ph.D. :: The Psychological Corporation
    Dr. Hanson is a clinical measurement consultant for The Psychological Corporation, a part of Pearson Assessment and Information. He has functioned as a school psychologist in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio. Most recently, he has been a senior licensed psychologist and director of training in a large metropolitan medical center. In that setting, his practice focused on therapeutic interventions with children, adolescents, and their families, and psychological assessments for differential diagnosis and treatment planning. He is an adjunct faculty member at Augsburg College, teaching courses in psychological assessment, abnormal psychology, personality, and adolescence. Dr. Hanson maintains a small private practice doing psychological assessments and family therapy with complex multi-problem families.

  • Linda M. Hermann, M.S. :: Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes
    Linda is the director of the Lindamood-Bell® Learning Center in Edina, Minnesota. As the Center’s director, she conducts diagnostic evaluations, manages the delivery of instruction, and identifies reading, spelling, and comprehension challenges. Linda holds her M.S. degree in communication disorders from the University of Vermont. Before Lindamood-Bell, Linda worked in Orono School District as a special education teacher for fifteen years and as a school speech-language pathologist for sixteen years.

  • Jeanne M. Juenger, M.S. :: Houston Public Schools
    A speech-language pathologist for Houston (MN) Public Schools ISD#294, Jeanne is a leader in the telepractice in speech-language service delivery in Minnesota schools, having first introduced the model in three rural school districts in 2006. Jeanne, the 2007 MSHA President, is a member of ASHA’s Telepractice Network and the Continuing Education Board. She is an active member of the American Telemedicine Association, serves as chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Telepractice for the Wisconsin Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and facilitates the selection and implementation of conferencing technology to access MSHA’s committee meetings from any point in the state of Minnesota.

  • Mary Simmons, M.A. :: VitalStim Therapy
    Mary is currently the senior clinical specialist in the VitalStim® Division of Empi, supporting and educating physician groups, administrators, and SLPs on dysphagia management and the implementation of modalities in dysphagia therapy. This role also includes active work with research and new product development. Mary is one of a select few Certified VitalStim Instructors. She has taught more than 400 courses in dysphagia and MBS interpretation. She previously worked at Baptist Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation in the inpatient, outpatient and pediatric departments. Mary was instrumental in developing the dysphagia program in the outpatient department and the speech department of the Pediatric Rehab. She serves as a knowledgeable resource in dysphagia to therapists around the country.

  • Cindy Ward :: Super Duper Publications
    Cindy graduated from Ohio University with a B.A. in speech-language pathology. She has an M.S. in speech-language pathology from Governors State University in Illinois. Cindy has worked in the elementary/junior high school systems in Maryland, Connecticut, Ohio, and Illinois for the past 34 years. During this time (1990-2000), she also consulted for 10 years with various agencies working with varied populations, including home health, long term care facilities, and adult mental health.
