2017 MSHA Convention Logo

MSHA’s annual Spring Convention features two full days of local and national speakers presenting on an array of subjects for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The 2017 Spring Convention will offer the opportunity to earn CEUs and network at the Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato, Minnesota, April 7-8.

Keynote Address: The Problem With Selffulness

MSHA 2017 Convention keynote speaker, Dr. Dan Sachau, PhD

Selffulness is a persistent state of self-focus that lowers life satisfaction, interferes with relationships, and slows healing. In this talk, Dr. Sachau discusses emerging research on the psychological benefits that occur when people stop focusing on themselves.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define and describe selfulness
  2. Participants will be able to describe strategies to increase satisfaction in career and relationships
  3. Participants will be able to list benefits of not focusing on themselves

Dr. Dan Sachau, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He specializes in social psychology and has research interests in: job satisfaction, employee motivation, self-presentation strategies and sport psychology.

Speaker Disclosure: Financial: Dr. Sachau is a salaried employee of Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is not receiving an honorarium from MSHA.

Breakout Sessions

Attendees may choose from among 25 presentations across 6 sessions. There will be something for everyone — tracks will include Medical topics on TBI and aphasia, Literacy, Third Party Billing, Adverse Childhood Experience, Voice, Articulation, Audiology, General Information and School-Based.

Roundtables

Attendees choose from small, moderated roundtable sessions and ask experts your questions: topics such as brain injury, voice, aphasia groups, literacy, multicultural issues, school-based issues, SLPA.

Posters and Contributed Papers

Attendees may visit clinical case presentations and reports, research projects, treatment outcomes, interdisciplinary programs, evidence-based practice, and related professional activities. Forums and papers will be presented during the Poster Session on Friday, April 7 from 4:30 – 6:00pm.

NEW Student Poster Session Awards

This year MSHA approved the creation of an award program for the Student Posters. MSHA seeks to reward and encourage excellence in research by new/emerging scholars are represented among the poster session delivered at the Annual Convention.

Up to three poster presentations will be recognized each year through this award. The presenters of the winning poster sessions each will receive an award certificate.

All poster sessions presented at the Annual Convention will be eligible for the award provided that they are presented in person during the Poster Session on Friday, April 7. Winners will be announced on Saturday April 8 at the Business Meeting.

NEW MSHA Sponsored Events

  • Thursday evening: We invite all MSU Mankato alumni and interested MSHA members to join us for an open house and tour at the new Clinical Sciences Building at Minnesota State University, Mankato. We will have an opening talk from Dean Retherford, a tour of the building and a hosted happy hour. More details to follow.
  • Friday evening: MSHA will be sponsoring a social event! More details to follow.
  • Friday evening: There will be a quartet concert at Bethany Lutheran College chapel to raise funds for Spasmodic Dysphonia research (Friday night 7:00 PM). More details to follow
  • Saturday Morning: Join fellow MSHA members in Yoga ($10 fee per person) or a walk/run. More details to follow.

There are even more reasons to attend:

  • Maximized CEs – 14 hours applied for from ASHA.
  • Exhibitors – Visit the companies at the exhibit tables to peruse the latest professional products, services, and employment opportunities by experts who know them best. Attendees will leave with a few new ideas!
  • Meals and Refreshments – Four meals and refreshment breaks are all included in the convention registration fee. Attendees celebrate with MSHA at our Honors and Awards Association luncheon on Friday. PLEASE plan to attend the Association breakfast and Annual Meeting on Saturday at 7:30am to hear what MSHA has done for you through statewide advocacy in education and health care.
  • "À la carte” Handouts – Registrants will be able to download the handout materials prior to and after the convention.
  • MSHFoundation Silent Auction – This event is the major fundraiser for the MSHFoundation scholarship program and is held annually at the MSHA Spring Convention. Donations are collected from individuals, corporations, and local businesses, and provide a fun and active silent "bidding" opportunity for convention participants.
