Building Responsible Learners—The Teaming Way
Linda Knebel Pruden, M.S. :: St. Paul Schools
The roles and expectations of SLPs working within the schools continue to change and expand. Today, federal and state guidelines strongly encourage resource model teaching within the classroom setting. This change is often scary for SLPs more familiar with traditional individual and small group sessions. More is also expected of students today. Students with listening and language needs are especially “at risk” for further school difficulties if they don’t learn strategies to empower themselves as learners. When speech-language pathologists and classroom teachers team, all students benefit. So, too, do the teacher and the SLP.
This course is designed to give participants strategies needed to successfully implement powerful therapy within the classroom setting that builds responsible learners. A brief overview of federal guidelines will be discussed. This will be followed by a review of the possible therapy approaches and a method to use in collaborating to decide which therapy approach will work best for each student. The different therapy approaches within the classroom setting will then be explored. Emphasis will be placed upon tying speech-language goals to curriculum goals, with the focus always being the enhancement of learning for the “at risk” students. Issues such as how to manage the caseload and the paperwork and keep accurate records while focusing on student needs will also be discussed. Additionally, time will be allotted for questions and answers. All information presented is the result of 25+ years experience in working within the classroom setting.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:
1. Discuss past theories/ideas and why the need for change.
2. Know how to team with the students’ needs in mind.
3. Know how to correlate speech-language therapy goals with curriculum goals.
4. Implement skills in getting started.
